A scientific drill project took place on Lake Chalco, the lake that once filled the basin in which the great city of Mexico was built.  The lake bed holds sediments deposited over hundreds of thousands of years and scientists are drilling into them to retrieve samples that hold clues to climatic changes and the history of volcanic eruptions in the basin through time.  The data is crucial in determining how climate changes and volcanic activity affected humans and their environment in the densely populated basin, and what is in store for the future.
